Many of our neighbors here in Jefferson County need a little assistance to stay
in their homes. Good Shepherd Caregivers provides free, non-medical caregiving
to home-based older adult or disabled Jefferson County residents. All of our
services are provided by volunteers. Our volunteers provide transportation to
medical and other appointments; make friendly visits and reassurance phone
calls; do household chores, yard work and fix-it projects; and in general
provide neighborly assistance that helps people live independently. We also
have a medical equipment loan program. Good Shepherd is not affiliated with any
particular faith community or religion in its provision of services.
Good Shepherd Caregivers will hold two Volunteer Training Workshops in June
(attend just one):
Tuesday, June 2 at 7 p.m. at the Parish House of Zion Episcopal Church, 221 E.
Washington Street, Charles Town.
Thursday, June 4 at 4 p.m., at the main office of Good Shepherd Caregivers, 101
S. Princess Street in Shepherdstown.
Each workshop will last about two hours and light refreshments will be served.
Becoming a volunteer takes very little time. Volunteers give as little or as
much time as they wish. Some help out occasionally, while others prefer to have
regularly scheduled caregiving times. There is no age limit on volunteering for
Good Shepherd. Some of our care receivers are also volunteers, helping with
mailings or making telephone calls from their homes. We encourage young people,
families, and civic and church groups to volunteer, as well as other individuals
of any age. Good Shepherd volunteers assisting with a recent United Way Day of
Caring project ranged in age from 9 to 87 years!
For more information, or to register for the workshop, please call the
volunteer coordinator at our Shepherdstown office, (304) 876-3325, or call our
Charles Town office, (304) 725-2262, or e-mail us at
info@gsivc.org. If you're
interested but can't attend the training, we'll be glad to make other
arrangements for you. We also encourage current volunteers to attend the
training, both as a refresher and to share their experiences.
