Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Open Hearts  - Open Minds – Open Doors

We welcome our visitors to Asbury UMC this morning and encourage you to fill out a form in the pews. This will help us in getting to know you.  Thanks for visiting us today.

  Welcome and Announcements

  Prelude          "Heal Our Land"                 Brooks
  Call to Worship
O Lord, calm the waves of this heart; calm its tempests.
Calm yourself, O my soul, so that the Divine can act in you.
Calm yourself, O my soul, so that God is able to repose in you, so that his peace may cover you.
Yes, Father in heaven, often have we found that the world cannot give us peace,
O but make us feel that you are able to give peace;
Let us know the truth of your promise that the whole world may not be able to take away your peace.
-Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855)

*Opening Hymn #377   “It Is Well with My Soul”

*Invocation
Gracious God, you take our willfulness and our willpower and you show us that, before you, we are powerless. You take our take-charge instinct, and you show us that all good comes from and through you.  You take our longings and desires, and you point us to where true fulfillment is found. Help us to rely on you, not to think we have to do it all ourselves. Help us to find our freedom in working for your kingdom, not for our own wants and yearnings. During this time of worship, bless us with the knowledge that you are in charge of our lives, and that we are your beloved children.  Help us to rest in this knowledge.  In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

*Act of Praise #393       “Spirit of the Living God”

*Scripture             Exodus 20:17

  Message            “Wanton Want”                          Pastor Jensen

  Prayer of Confession
We come before you, Lord, with repentant hearts. We confess to indulging in moments of worldly mindedness.  Our culture entices us with a desire for more, more, more, and we gladly acquiesce.  We want what we do not have, and we have what we do not want.  And we wonder why peace and happiness allude us.  Forgive us, dear Lord.  (Silent confession). Reprogram our hearts and minds, so that we might be clear about what we really want from our lives. Guide us straight toward these goals. Let us not be distracted by what other people have.  Instead, through your grace and peace, may we be content with and grateful for all that you have given us.  Amen.

  Assurance of Pardon
Now hear what the Lord has given us: "He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far he removes our transgressions from us."  We are forgiven!

Offering of God’s Tithes and Our Gifts

Music at the Offering         “Let Us Break Bread Together”

*The Doxology  #95         8:30   “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow”
#94        11:00   “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow”

*Prayer of Thanksgiving

THANKSGIVING AND COMMUNION
  Communion

Giving of the Bread and Cup

*Closing Hymn #666          “Shalom to You”

*Benediction
Send us forth, O God, as instruments of your peace, not weapons of our own self-destruction. Direct us in the narrow path of righteousness, not the broad byway of wickedness. May our lives be governed by and ground in that peace which only you can give us.  Out of that peace, grant us the gentle touch of your love to heal the wounded, lonely, lost and searching. Amen.

Extinguishing of Candles
(Please remain at your seat as the candles are extinguished and as the Acolyte exits the sanctuary.)

*Postlude         “America, the Beautiful”

(*)PLEASE STAND AS YOU ARE ABLE
